Pepcid (famotidine)
Belongs to a class of drugs known as H2 (histamine-2) receptor antagonists. It is primarily used to treat conditions related to excess stomach acid production.
Benefits and uses of Pepcid:
Heartburn Relief: Pepcid is commonly used to relieve heartburn and symptoms of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD). It works by reducing the production of stomach acid, which can help alleviate the burning sensation and discomfort associated with heartburn.
Acid Indigestion: Pepcid can also be used to treat acid indigestion (dyspepsia), which is characterized by discomfort or pain in the upper abdomen often associated with a feeling of fullness, bloating, or gas.
Gastric Ulcer and Duodenal Ulcer Healing: It is prescribed to help heal and prevent recurrence of gastric and duodenal ulcers. By reducing stomach acid production, it allows the ulcerated tissues to heal more effectively.
Prevention of Stress Ulcers: In hospitalized patients or those with critical illnesses, Pepcid may be administered to prevent stress ulcers, which can develop due to physiological stress and are associated with increased stomach acid production.
Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may use Pepcid to relieve symptoms of allergic reactions, such as hives and itching. It can help block the release of histamine, which plays a role in allergic responses.
Reduction of Acid-Related Symptoms: Pepcid can reduce acid-related symptoms, such as sour stomach, excessive burping, and regurgitation of stomach acid into the throat.
